Hi, welcome back to Mixed Messages Extra! This week, we’re giving you the chance to win one of ten copies of Nicola Dinan’s phenomenal debut novel, Bellies, now out in paperback, as well as exclusive Bellies merch, including tote bags, badges and more.
We spoke to Nicola in June last year, where she spoke about how racial identity and how we understand our race relative to others is contingent on time and place. Since then, Bellies has been longlisted for the Gordon Burn Prize, shortlisted for the Mo Siewcharran Prize and a finalist for a Lambda Literary Award.
In the book, Nicola introduces us to Tom and Ming. Starting as your typical boy meets boy story, Tom and Ming meet on a night out at university and fall hard for each other. It’s not long before they are planning a future and building a life.
But when Ming announces her intention to transition, the couple face a shift in their relationship and are forced to confront the vastly different shapes their lives have taken. They must both ask if it is worth losing a part of themselves – or each other – to become the people they want to be.
