Hi, welcome to Mixed Messages Extra! This week, we’re sharing an exclusive watchback of our very first live event featuring Jassa Ahluwalia, Hanako Footman and Nicole Ocran.
Last month, over 100 of us came together for the very first Mixed Messages Live. It was such a special evening and I am endlessly humbled that this platform continues to speak to so many of you.
Speaking to Jassa Ahluwalia, Hanako Footman and Nicole Ocran, we explored everything from stereotypes around mixed people and the importance of language to finding your identity on your own terms. It was an evening of laughter, tears and community, and it was so wonderful to connect with so many of you in person.
If you couldn’t make it, make sure you’re a paid subscriber to watch the whole event above.
And if you want your very own Mixed Messages tote bag and bookmark, you can shop them on Etsy now!
This event would not have been the success it was without the support of so many people, so I want to say a huge thank you to:
Crazy Gin who kept you in cocktails all night
Nadine Merabi (interview here) and Anisha Parmar for my dress and jewellery
Samsung for the incredible venue
Matthew Sparkes and Deepanjli Motala for editing this video and my branding
Primrose Books for facilitating our signings
As for our INCREDIBLE goody bags (in our Mixed Messages tote bags, which you can shop on Etsy now,) I want to say a huge thank you to:
ChinChin Prints (coming to Mixed Messages soon)
Nepthys Illustrates (coming to Mixed Messages soon)
Keep your eyes peeled for our next live event, which will hopefully happen before the end of the year – see you there!

Mixed Messages is a weekly exploration of the mixed-race experience, from me, Isabella Silvers. My mom is Punjabi (by way of East Africa) and my dad is white British, but finding my place between these two cultures hasn’t always been easy. That’s why I started Mixed Messages, where each week I’ll speak to a prominent mixed voice to delve into what it really feels like to be mixed.
